Tens of thousands of elephants are killed each year by poachers simply to make money off of their ivory. So what needs to be changed is the tusks. If elephants adapted to smaller size tusks and changed the color to brown, the poachers may quit hunting for tusks. If the elephants are smaller, they could run faster and be harder to hunt.

As you can see, African Forest Elephants are close to extinction because of poachers. Our genetically enhanced tusks will be virtually impossible to break or separate from the skull. The protein levels will be exceedingly high and there will be a more firm bond between each of the tusks and tEventually poachers will give up on trying to get the ivory and the African Forest Elephants can make their comeback.
